When a mattress is described as orthopaedic, it means it supports your joints, spine and keeps your back straight while you sleep. A doctor or chiropractor will often recommend an ortho mattress to people dealing with back issues.
An orthopaedic mattress can be made with any material and may or may not have an innerspring. If it does have springs, they can be in a wide variety of configurations, such as open springs, pocket springs or rows of springs secured to one another with wire.
Most orthopaedic mattresses are firm, although this is not always the case. Orthopaedic mattresses for back pain sufferers offer much-needed respite and also provide excellent support for the rest of your body.
If you need help with sizing a new mattress, please see the chart on the FAQs page, or contact our orthopaedic mattress expert for advice using the chat feature at the foot of the page.
